Evidence of gambling stretches back to ancient times. What started out as a simple game of predicting an outcome with a wager has now turned into a multi-billion dollar industry. From a simple game of dice-throwing, gambling or more commonly called the gaming industry, has now evolved into a variety of games ranging from the slot machines to poker and all these can be found in a casino. In Malaysia, Genting Berhad is the sole licensee of the gaming industry but it's business have grown to such great success

that it is now the largest casino operator in the United Kingdom. The gaming industry, particularly casinos, offers more than just a place to gamble. In fact, there are a few reasons why they are so integral to the locale it is set up in. Just imagine a casino run by robots. The croupiers, security officers and cleaners are all machines running on pre-determined software. Everything is done in a sequential method and they do a task over and over again without fail. Now, open your eyes and what you will realize is that we are not there yet. What is real, however, is that casinos require a relatively large team of employees to ensure that you get a good gaming experience. That means job opportunities. From cleaners who wash the bathroom once every hour to the security officer who watches the surveillance cameras, the amount of jobs available can lower the unemployment rate of any town. For example, Genting casinos by itself employ more than 13,000 employees for their operations and that means better living standards for the people living around the area.

On top of creating jobs and career opportunities for people living around casinos, these gaming centres are also huge contributors to tax collected by the local government. Again, using Genting as an example, the tax collected by the Malaysian government totalled over 200 million ringgit for 2011 as of the month of June. This tax money can be channelled into building schools in the rural areas, provide assistance to the poor and disabled as well as improving the infrastructure of the areas surrounding the casino.

In order to make their customers feel comfortable, casinos usually cater to the needs of customers by providing lounge and dining areas. The idea is so that they allow customers to continue playing without having the need to go elsewhere for food and drinks. However, business owners have picked up on the opportunity and have set up business around casinos. Now, you can find premium coffee stores, fine dining restaurants and sometimes even apparel boutiques around casinos. In Malaysia, there is even a multi-level shopping mall located directly next to the main casino, Casino De Genting. With a steady influx of customers to these casinos, there is almost a guarantee that it is a lucrative opportunity for these businesses. Casinos do not only provide entertainment for gaming customers, but also to the whole family. Many casinos are now built alongside theme parks to provide complete entertainment for the whole family. With better rides and more exciting games, families are increasingly going to these casino theme parks primarily for the rides and games, only having a go in the casinos as a late night activity when the children are in bed.

Casinos are, in fact, no different than any other large manufacturing corporations. Both provide jobs and contribute to increasing the standard of living in the areas surrounding it. Just look at how Genting transformed a secluded hilltop into a popular attraction in Malaysia and is one of the most successful corporations in Asia. In short, the benefits associated with casinos far outweigh the negatives.
